Internship position to contribute to embedded software development for defense-related radio hardware.
About the company
- Harmattan AI is a next-generation defense prime building autonomous and scalable defense systems. Following the close of a $200M Series B, valuing the company at $1.4 billion, we are expanding our teams and capabilities to deliver mission-critical systems to allied forces.
- Our work is guided by clear values: building technologies with real-world impact, pursuing excellence in everything we do, setting ambitious goals, and taking on the hardest technical challenges. We operate in a demanding environment where rigor, ownership, and execution are expected.
Responsibilities
- The Radio team needs additional capacity to support an ongoing project roadmap around the radio. We have more well-scoped embedded work — firmware, drivers, validation tooling, documentation — than current bandwidth allows.
- As an Embedded Software Engineer Intern, you will join the team to contribute to the embedded software stack that runs on and around this radio — from low-level firmware and drivers up to the tooling and infrastructure used to validate it.
- The scope is intentionally broad: you will get exposure to the full embedded software lifecycle in the context of a custom hardware project.
- The duration of this internship is 5–6 months.
- Firmware development: Actively contribute to the development of the firmware for the radio and its surrounding embedded platform, utilizing C within an Eclipse ThreadX real-time environment.
- Low-Level Integration: Implement, and debug low-level drivers and communication protocols (SPI, I2C, UART) to manage interfaces between the chip and host systems.
- Test Automation: Build and improve validation tooling for the radio software stack, including the development of scripted test sequences and CI integration using Python and Rust.
- Hardware Characterization: Contribute to the bring-up and debugging on physical hardware, collaborating closely with hardware and radio-frequency engineers.
- Technical Documentation: Write and maintain rigorous design notes, driver/API references, validation reports, and onboarding materials to support the team’s knowledge base.
- Agile Collaboration: Participate in code reviews, design discussions, and core team rituals—including planning and retrospectives—as a full member of the Radio team.
Requirements
- Educational Background: Currently in final or penultimate year of a Master’s degree in Computer Science, Embedded Software, Robotics, Software Engineering, or a related field
- Project Execution & Ownership: An adaptive learner with the ability to navigate tasks, offering creative solutions and collaborating effectively within a team to drive high-quality project results.
- Adaptability & Mobility: Thrives under pressure in a fast-paced, dynamic environment; embraces a “no-task-is-too-small” mentality.
- Communication & Influence : Excellent written and verbal communication, capable of leading diverse principals
- Commitment : 100% dedication to Harmattan AI’s mission, vision, and ambitious growth plans, ready to go the extra mile to ensure operational excellence.
- Domain Interest: A genuine passion for or curiosity about radio systems and wireless technologies is considered an added bonus for this role but not a hard requirement.
- We look forward to hearing how you can help shape the future of autonomous defense systems at Harmattan AI.
