AFO Designer

70000 –105000 USD / yearUSA

Design role focused on musculoskeletal care products integrating AI, robotics, and healthcare.

Responsibilities

  • The AFO Designer fabricates and finishes custom ankle-foot orthoses and related lower-extremity bracing from clinician-prescribed work orders. You work under the Lead 3D Designer's quality standards, operating CAD/CAM and traditional fabrication equipment to produce devices that are dimensionally accurate and clinically appropriate. This is a production-floor role with a high quality bar — your hands make the product, and your work directly determines patient outcomes and claim defensibility.
  • Fabricate custom AFOs (solid, articulated, floor reaction, carbon fiber, SMO) from Hike Clinical work orders.
  • Operate 3D scanning and CAD/CAM systems to produce device designs from digital patient models.
  • Perform thermoplastic and carbon fiber layup, trimming, padding, and finishing to Hike design standards.
  • Conduct quality checks on finished devices against work order specifications before shipment.
  • Flag clinical specification issues or material constraints to the Lead 3D Designer before fabrication.
  • Maintain accurate production records in the Hike system, linking each device to its patient, work order, and quality check.
  • Participate in design reviews and continuous improvement sessions with the Lead 3D Designer and clinical team.

Requirements

  • 2+ years fabricating custom AFOs or lower-extremity orthotics in an O&P lab or clinical setting.
  • Hands-on experience with thermoplastic and/or carbon fiber AFO fabrication — draping, forming, trimming, riveting, padding.
  • Familiarity with CAD/CAM fabrication and 3D scanning preferred; willingness to learn required.
  • Detail-oriented: you catch dimensional issues before they leave the floor, not after.
  • ABC or BOC certification (or in progress) preferred; relevant apprenticeship or lab technician background also considered.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced production environment where quality standards are non-negotiable.

Other

  • Hike Medical is building the defining company in musculoskeletal care. We sit at the intersection of AI, robotics, and healthcare, operating across three product lines: a proprietary AI-vision platform that turns a 30-second, web-based foot scan into custom 3D-printed orthotics; an AI agent platform that automates the entire DME workflow from pre-visit processing through claims and revenue cycle; and SoleForge, our vertically integrated 3D-printing factory producing custom medical devices at a scale the industry has never seen.
  • Insoles today, full DME tomorrow, bionics by 2040. Custom insoles are just the wedge. Our long-term vision is bionics: AI-designed, robotically manufactured orthotic and prosthetic devices at scale, replacing a fragmented, manual industry that hasn’t changed in decades. Read the full vision at bionics2040.com .
  • We’re live across the industry’s largest national orthotics-and-prosthetics providers and tracking toward a $50M run rate by the end of 2026. We’ve stealthily raised $22M across Seed and Series A from top-tier investors who backed OpenAI, Anduril, and Mercury early, and we run a fast, results-first, high-ownership culture out of our SF Rincon Hill office.
  • The Center of Excellence is the intelligence engine of Hike. It owns the clinical and coding knowledge that powers every AI agent — producing agent guides per code block, setting evaluation standards, informing all compliance policies, and managing the human-in-the-loop team. CoE roles are the highest-leverage positions in the company: the documents and workflows you build determine how fast we expand into new device categories.
